Enchanted Metallics Bridal Shoot

Talk about an ideal setting for a wedding!  Lush green fields lined with towering pines.  Annuals and perennials that perfectly surround the ceremony area and its beautiful bluestone altar.  The privacy and uniqueness of The Farmer’s Daughter make for the perfect outdoor venue for your special day.  This was the site for my most recent photo shoot, “Enchanted Metallics”, with Made in March photography.


The theme of this shoot was “Enchanted Metallics” and the stunning set design is credited to Jennifer Gee of Gwen Studios.  Using flowers from Greenlion Weddings, Jennifer crafted a gorgeous table display featuring copper from East Coast Tinning and calligraphy from Brown Fox Calligraphy. 

 

 Liz and I were brought on board for hair and makeup.  We had some inspiration boards to look over but we were given free reign to create the looks we thought would work for the concept.  Liz chose to construct a beautiful fishtail braid for Mariah and it worked perfectly with her style and dresses.  In keeping with the metallic theme, I wanted to make sure to include some with the makeup. 

 

I chose a coppery eyeshadow for Mariah and balanced it with a sheer wash of color for her lips and cheeks.  I used some of my favorite products for this shoot.  To even out her skin, I used the new Beautycounter Tint Skin Complexion Coverage.  Then, to achieve the flushed cheek I had in mind, I used Beautycounter’s Lip Sheer in Plum as a cream blush and then used it again on her lips.  I topped that off with a light layer of Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Stained Gloss in Rhythm Box to add dimension.  The best part of this shoot for me?  Being able to do makeup while sitting on the grass.  I was in heaven.

 

I always love working with Made in March.  Sarah’s got a killer eye so I know the images will always be on point.

Makeup and Image Seminar on Marthas Vineyard

“Come to Martha’s Vineyard to talk makeup,” they said. “It will be fun!” they said.

Well, yeah!  Of course it was! How could it NOT be? Talking makeup and image to a group of female business owners, like myself? What’s not to love? 

This event was the maiden voyage for the speaker series entitled Sustainable Marketing for the Small Business in the Modern Advertising Space. This is an educational initiative started by Tamar Russell Brown of Sitka Creations and The Martha’s Vineyard Guide to promote, educate and inspire Martha’s Vineyard business owners on various relevant topics including marketing, design, networking and our portion, which addressed personal presentation. I was invited to present this part of the series with another speaker, Susan Norton.

Susan is a psychotherapist on the Island and she also created and markets her own skin care line called Sashabelle

Susan started us off by sharing her own story of how she came to the decision to create her own skin care products. As she became more educated about the many dangerous chemicals in the products she had been using, she felt inspired to create something she could feel good about putting on her skin. She spoke of an inner voice that was impelling her to pursue this path and how we need to pay attention to our own inner voice when we are being nudged towards change. It is always a treat to meet women who care about safe skin care as I do, especially when they are doing their part to make a change.

For my portion of the event I wanted to focus on the psychology of appearance; how the way you look affects how you feel, how the way you feel, in turn, affects how others perceive you and how a few simple changes using just a few products can make a big difference. Doing research for my presentation was fascinating. There is seemingly endless data regarding the effects of color, makeup, clothing and grooming in regards to the impressions one makes as a job candidate to a potential employer or as a business owner to a potential customer.  In any and every aspect of life, actually.

After Susan and I finished our speaking portions it was time for a makeup demonstration. We drew a name from the list of attendees to be our model. The lovely Nicole Friedler, a professional photographer from the Island, was chosen and I was able to show the ladies an easy, five-minute makeup application using just four products. This is a routine that everybody has time for and can really make a big difference in helping you look polished and professional. Here is what I used:

Koh Gen Do Aqua Foundation 

Beautycounter Every Day A. M. Hydrating Cream

Beautycounter Lip Sheer in Plum

Dr. Hauschka Volume Mascara 

Jordana Fabubrow Eyebrow Pencil

These are the core items you need for a simple look. I mixed the foundation with the day cream to make it even more hydrating and natural and buffed it into the skin with a foundation brush. You could use your fingers or a makeup sponge (I recommend the Beauty Blender). Then I used the amazing Plum Lip Sheer as a blush and lipstick. The color may seem really dark when you look at it, but the texture of these products is fantastic. They are sheer and buildable. So you can literally just swipe the tube on your cheeks and blend, add more as you want to intensify the color. Technically they are a lip product but they are the best cream blushes I have ever used. After you apply it as a blush, just sweep it over your lips.  Again, this product is buildable. Use just one layer for a soft wash of color or go over it again to make it deeper. They feel like heaven and smell like vanilla. As a side note, every shade can be used on the cheeks as well as the lips. Plum just happens to be a favorite of mine. 

I then lightly filled in Nicole’s brows with a brow pencil. My staple brow pencil happens to cost $2.99. Go figure. Let me use this as an opportunity to say that filling in your eyebrows is one of the simplest and most dramatic things you can do to bring structure to your face and attention to your eyes. It will seem “scary” at first but once you see how much better you look, it’s a step you won’t ever want to skip.  Everyone will notice how great you look but they probably won’t realize why. It might take some getting used to, but it is worth it.  Baby steps. Just do it.

Once Nicole’s makeover was complete, I had a blast color matching everyone for foundation and doing mini-makeovers on all of them! What a wonderful group of ladies.

Special thanks to Joanne Sardini and The Vineyard Square Hotel for hosting the event and allowing me to stay in one of their absolutely gorgeous suites. Between Joanne and the hotel and Chesca’s Restaurant I didn’t want to leave … so I made a weekend of it. What a fun time.

Beautycounter Lip Sheer Review

I have a confession to make.  I have been almost silent about the first color cosmetic product in the Beautycounter line even though it has been out for months.  Even though I am a makeup artist and even though I love it.  Even though I use it and even though, like everything else in the line, it is amazing.  I have been quiet because, well, it's not cheap.  We all have budgets, I get it.  But then Christy Coleman (Beautycounter's celebrity makeup artist) said that you can also use the Lip Sheers as a blush and I thought, "hmmmmmm".  It took me forever to remember to do it (no idea why) but, oh my, was she right.  Not only can you use it as a blush, it is actually quite fantastic.  It has amazing staying power and beautiful color.  So now that you can multitask with one beautifully packaged, non-toxic, vanilla scented wonder . . .  I'm telling you about it!  

A little 411 on these babies.  Six shades in all: Petal, Twig, Coral, Rose, Currant and Plum (in order per the pic above).  Here is the breakdown:

Petal: Beautifully soft, light pink.  Very sheer.  Perfect for non-lipstick wearers or when you want a truly soft wash of natural color.

Twig: Have you spent the better part of your teenage and adult life searching for the perfect nude lip color?  Me, too.  The search is over.  You're welcome. 

Coral: Can't really elaborate on the shade all that much . . . "coral" is a perfectly perfect description.

Rose: Deeper pink than Petal. Very romantic and pretty.

Currant: Lovely reddish-brown.  More intense shade.  Classic. Not as red as the picture.

Plum: Beautiful purple-toned red.  Lovely.

These shades were formulated to look good on every skin tone so you just have to pick the one you like the best.  The shades most suited as a blush are Coral, Rose, Currant and Plum.  The darker the shade, the more staying power in general.  In fact, Currant and Plum most definitely have a stain factor to them.  They are also my personal favorites as blushes, Plum being my number one.  I am a big fan of a flushed cheek look and Plum really does the trick.

The texture of the Lip Sheers is kind of hard to describe.  They are their own little enigma.  They are not really a lipstick or a lip balm or a lip stain or a lip gloss.  They are kind of just the best parts of all of those things.  They go on like butter.  Seriously.  They smell like vanilla and feel beautifully soft on your lips.  The packaging makes you feel kinda sorta super special when you put it on, too.  All fancy like.  See???

Currant and Plum are especially versatile.  One coat will give you a sheer wash of color.  A second coat right on top of that adds intensity and impact.  Top any of these shades off with the Beautycounter Lip Shine ($24) and you will add gloss and a slight shimmer, giving you yet another completely different look.

The Best Skin Care Line EVER

Can I just say, it has been really hard keeping this a secret!  I found an amazing line of skin care products that I am over the moon about.  Considering that I have been ACTIVELY searching for a truly natural and healthy line that I adore for years, this is a big deal.  I wanted to tell you all about it right away but here’s the deal.  You can’t buy this line in stores.  You have to buy it from a consultant.  It is the ONLY thing I don’t love because I am not a sales kind of gal but the mission of this line is really, really important to me so I had to make a decision.  If this stuff really was as good as it sounded and I knew it would improve the lives of people I care about, I had to at least consider getting involved.  There was no way I could do that unless I was truly ecstatic about the line.  I just can’t fake stuff like that.  I decided to use the line exclusively for one month to see how I liked it.  I had tried it for a few days and loved it but for me, that was not enough time to really know.  Thanks to a generous return policy, I felt comfortable taking a leap of faith.

Needless to say, I am never going back.  Let me tell you a little bit about this amazing skin care line, Beautycounter.  Beautycounter just launched on March 1, 2013.  The mission of this company is simple.  They state it best: “We educate families about the need for safer chemicals and products, and work to bring about much needed change to the beauty industry—and to our lives.”  This really resonates with me and it is what I have been trying to educate people about for a while now.  The chemicals we are taking into our bodies through our skin are a big deal.  They affect us, they hinder our health and they contribute to disease.  There are plenty of natural, more often allegedly natural lines out there but guess what?  They don’t really work.  Sorry, I am picky! 

This company came into my life in an unexpected way and I am so glad.  I am completely confident about the safety and effectiveness of these products and that conviction helped me overcome that pesky little obstacle of how to get it to my friends and family.  How can I not tell you all about it?  You are using products every day to cleanse, moisturize and treat your skin, hair and body.  You are buying these products anyway.  I am just here to help you make a better, safer choice for yourself, your family and everyone else you care about.

I can’t stress this enough; these decisions matter and they add up.  By taking control of the choices you make every day, you are helping to give your body a fighting chance in this toxin-filled world we live in.  The fact that these products make you look like a million bucks doesn’t hurt, either.

So, I will be reviewing the products one by one and posting articles so you can learn more about them.  I have a set of the entire line for my local friends who want to borrow it to try it out for a few days.  Prepare to get really, really spoiled.
