My Favorite Kitchen Cupboard Cleanser

There’s a general rule of thumb out there as far as natural skin care products go.  Basically, if you can’t eat it, don’t use it.  I’m really passionate about natural products but, man, that’s not an easy one to follow!  Even with natural product lines (and especially the wannabe natural lines), you are still dealing with long ingredient labels that can make you dizzy in no time.  Deciphering the English from the Latin and trying to figure out if “naturally derived” means anything natural at all, it’s easy to get lazy and give up. 

I’m a firm believer in balance and doing the best you can when you can.  Makeup is my thing.  You can’t eat it.  I’m over it.  Facial cleansers, though, are a nice little niche that you can be really good with and not be sacrificing quality.  There are so many foods that double as skin loving powerhouses that you just have no excuse for not at least giving them a try.  As an added bonus, they are super cheap to make and you may even have the ingredients in your cupboard already!

I want to share with you a recipe that I have been using for a while now.  I am so happy with it and have seen a significant benefit to my own skin.  You know I’m not going to tell you to do something unless I know it’s awesome, right?  You’re going to love this.  Here are the ingredients:

½ cup organic rolled oats

1 tbsp. organic raw honey

1 tbsp. organic liquid aloe vera (not gel)

2 tbsp. organic rosewater

Grind the oats in a coffee grinder or food processor until you have a fine powder.  Simply add the rest of the ingredients to your oatmeal powder and mix well.  I store mine in a small glass jar.  It’s that easy.

The texture of the cleanser is slightly gritty and a little sticky.  If you wear makeup, you are going to want to use a makeup remover or wipe first to remove the makeup.  Simply apply the cleanser and gently massage in.  The texture of it is mildly exfoliating.  You can even leave it on for a few minutes as a mask.  Be careful when using it near your hairline.  It is easy to get the oatmeal in your hair and it doesn’t look so pretty.  If you are using it in the shower or before bed, you don’t need to worry. When you rinse it off, your skin is soft and smooth.

What makes it great is all about the ingredients:

Oatmeal – mildly exfoliating, softening, cleansing, soothing

Raw honey – antibacterial, antimicrobial, soothing, healing, vitamin and mineral-rich

Aloe vera – soothing, healing, antibacterial, calming

Rosewater – mildly antiseptic, nourishing, hydrating, calming

Scanning through the benefits of these ingredients you can conclude that this cleanser is especially effective for skin challenges such as acne, rosacea and eczema.  I love it because it works. So get in that kitchen and whip some up!  If you get hungry, just have a bite ;-)
