REAL Head Shots (finally!)

Danielle Bisbano - Wednesday, July 17, 2013

It has been a long time coming but I finally made a plan to get some real deal photos done for my website.  As a consumer, I always prefer when I can actually see who I am considering working with.  I figure my clients might feel that way, too!

Liz (hair), Heather (massage) and I (makeup) had so much fun working with Amy at Olivia Greene Photography.  It was brutally hot  and humid out but I must say that everyone's airbrush makeup held up beautifully.  See why everyone wants this stuff?!  You can check out the rest of the images here.

We will be choosing our images from these photos that Amy picked.  Look for updates to my site very soon and let me know what you think!

Beautycounter Every Day AM Hydrating Cream

Danielle Bisbano - Friday, June 28, 2013

There are like a gazillion face moisturizers out there, right? So how can it be so hard to find just the right one? I don’t know but it is! They are either too greasy or too heavy or too light or too sticky or smell like old perfume or make your face shiny, the list goes on and on. I have literally been searching for the perfect moisturizer for my kit for years. I needed one that would replenish and hydrate but also absorb completely without causing any irritation. It was harder than I anticipated.

The way I heard about Beautycounter was such a fluke. Talk about coincidence. Having an opportunity to actually try out the line was a gift. I was like a kid in a candy store. Real world testing with no strings attached. Perfect. Exactly what I needed for my seemingly never-ending moisturizer search. I have been a huge facial oil fan for years and I have oily skin so a “regular" moisturizer is my first item to skip on myself, for all the reasons listed above! When I tried Every Day I loved how it totally absorbed with no residue and made my skin so soft. It created an ideal base for my makeup and it has been absolutely perfect for my kit.

Every Day AM Hydrating Cream is also remarkably versatile! If you want a little extra moisture, you can mix it with a few drops of your Lustro facial oil or apply it after you have applied your facial oil. It also works great for making your own tinted moisturizer. Simply mix 1-2 pumps of Every Day with a small amount of your favorite foundation and you have a more lightweight and hydrating version of your makeup. I have already seen this product work wonders for people whether their skin is dry or sensitive or both. One try and you will see what makes this product so great. Just add it to the ever-growing list of products that I love in this line!

Makeup Guide for the Stylish Bride

Danielle Bisbano - Tuesday, February 19, 2013

You have dreamed about this day since you were a little girl. You have spent months preparing and planning, making sure of every last detail. The truth is, your wedding day goes by in the blink of an eye. It is your photos that will last forever. Here are some tips to make sure that your makeup and hair look perfect on your special day and stand the test of time for years to come.

As with all the other facets of your wedding day, no doubt your budget is a factor here, too. If you are comfortable applying your own makeup, feel that you do a good job with it and have plenty of it, you may wish to do it yourself. On the other hand, if you never wear makeup and don’t own any but you want to wear it for your wedding, doing it yourself is not the best way to go. By the time you buy everything you are going to need, you’ll spend more than it would cost to have it done professionally. Hiring a makeup artist also allows you to relax and be pampered on your special day and, really, don’t you deserve that?

Even when hiring a professional, there are some considerations to keep in mind. First, how do you find one? Referrals and recommendations are your best bet. Friends or family who had a good experience with someone or an acquaintance in the beauty industry who recommends someone are both great places to start. You will want to see pictures of their work first and always be sure to do a trial run. The trial run is where you decide on your wedding look so you can see exactly what it will be like BEFORE the big day. It is also where you get to evaluate your makeup artist and decide if this is the person that you want to work with. My trial run resulted in me doing my own makeup for my wedding. Needless to say, I am really glad I did a trial!

When it comes to deciding on a makeup look for your wedding day, it is probably better to avoid being trendy. Emerald green metallic cat-eye makeup could be the hottest thing for the season but a year from now you can be sure it won’t be. A classic look, however, is timeless and always appropriate. When it comes to colors, chose what looks best on you as opposed to trying to match your bridesmaids’ dresses or flowers. Nobody has to match each other; the only “rule” is that everyone’s makeup should be similar in intensity and nobody’s makeup should be so intense that it strongly overpowers the bride. Be sure that you have a well-defined lip and eyes for your photos. False lashes really make a huge difference in pictures so definitely consider them. They are not easy to put on yourself so this is a case where it would be wise to have your makeup artist do them for you.

Chances are you are going to want to look extra special on your wedding day but you still want to feel like yourself. If you are completely uncomfortable with how you look it will show. However, do you really want to look the way you do every day? No! So embrace your inner princess and get ready for the camera.

How to find your favorite makeup: Part one

Danielle Bisbano - Thursday, August 09, 2012

How many cosmetics brands can you name off the top of your head? You’re already mentally rattling off Maybelline, Cover Girl, L’Oreal. Those are easy! How about a few more? Lancome, Estee Lauder, Clinique? Of course you have heard of them. But what about INGLOT, KohGenDo or Jordana? Maybe not. Why is that? One word: advertising.

Try to flip though a fashion magazine without finding an ad for one or even all of these companies. Most of these brands use mega celebrities to represent their brands. Lancome has Julia Roberts, Kate Winslet and Emma Watson to name a few. Revlon has Emma Stone, Halle Berry and Olivia Wilde and the list could go on and on. These are huge corporations with really big budgets but there are literally hundreds of other brands out there that you have probably never heard of simply because you have never seen an advertisement. Some may be expensive but lots of them are not. This is where some industry-specific tools can really come in handy.

If you are interested in makeup, or obsessed with it like I am, you should know about a few great ways to wade through the endless choices of products and find the ones that are really worth your time and money. The cosmetics industry is a multi-billion dollar business. Don’t be a casualty with an empty wallet and only your makeup graveyard to show for it (you have one and you know it). We’re going to explore three great methods, one at a time, that you can use to make smart decisions about your makeup and skin care purchases.

First, we will consider online reviews. Let’s say you already know the product you are thinking of buying. Google any product name and you will find the vendors that sell it and, likely, a 1-5-star rating. This might be enough to get you started and help you decide if it is still worth looking into. When you see a product on Sephora with a thousand reviews and just about five stars, chances are it is probably pretty good! If that’s enough for you to justify your purchase, you’re all set. If you want more detail or want to learn about great products that you never have even heard of, then Makeup Alley is the place. This is a really helpful site. You can look up just about any product (makeup, skin care, hair care, etc.) and you will get detailed reviews and ratings from real people that have actually used it. One important thing to keep in mind: pay attention to the number of reviews for the item you are researching. An obscure product with just one review and 5-star rating probably won’t hold up against a product with 500 reviews and a 4-star rating. It's a numbers game and this is a place where quantity matters. Makeup Alley is a wonderful resource for learning how products work (and don't work!) in the real world. Valuable details like “this color actually comes out more red than brown” can be your deciding factor when trying to pick out a new lipstick.

In the next article we will explore another tool with valuable insights. Video tutorials.
