Makeup and Image Seminar on Marthas Vineyard

Danielle Bisbano - Tuesday, July 29, 2014

“Come to Martha’s Vineyard to talk makeup,” they said. “It will be fun!” they said.

image

Well, yeah!  Of course it was! How could it NOT be? Talking makeup and image to a group of female business owners, like myself? What’s not to love?

This event was the maiden voyage for the speaker series entitled Sustainable Marketing for the Small Business in the Modern Advertising Space. This is an educational initiative started by Tamar Russell Brown of Sitka Creations and The Martha’s Vineyard Guide to promote, educate and inspire Martha’s Vineyard business owners on various relevant topics including marketing, design, networking and our portion, which addressed personal presentation. I was invited to present this part of the series with another speaker, Susan Norton.

Susan is a psychotherapist on the Island and she also created and markets her own skin care line called Sashabelle

Susan started us off by sharing her own story of how she came to the decision to create her own skin care products. As she became more educated about the many dangerous chemicals in the products she had been using, she felt inspired to create something she could feel good about putting on her skin. She spoke of an inner voice that was impelling her to pursue this path and how we need to pay attention to our own inner voice when we are being nudged towards change. It is always a treat to meet women who care about safe skin care as I do, especially when they are doing their part to make a change.

For my portion of the event I wanted to focus on the psychology of appearance; how the way you look affects how you feel, how the way you feel, in turn, affects how others perceive you and how a few simple changes using just a few products can make a big difference. Doing research for my presentation was fascinating. There is seemingly endless data regarding the effects of color, makeup, clothing and grooming in regards to the impressions one makes as a job candidate to a potential employer or as a business owner to a potential customer.  In any and every aspect of life, actually.

After Susan and I finished our speaking portions it was time for a makeup demonstration. We drew a name from the list of attendees to be our model. The lovely Nicole Friedler, a professional photographer from the Island, was chosen and I was able to show the ladies an easy, five-minute makeup application using just four products. This is a routine that everybody has time for and can really make a big difference in helping you look polished and professional. Here is what I used:

Koh Gen Do Aqua Foundation

Beautycounter Every Day A. M. Hydrating Cream

Beautycounter Lip Sheer in Plum

Dr. Hauschka Volume Mascara

Jordana Fabubrow Eyebrow Pencil

image

These are the core items you need for a simple look. I mixed the foundation with the day cream to make it even more hydrating and natural and buffed it into the skin with a foundation brush. You could use your fingers or a makeup sponge (I recommend the Beauty Blender). Then I used the amazing Plum Lip Sheer as a blush and lipstick. The color may seem really dark when you look at it, but the texture of these products is fantastic. They are sheer and buildable. So you can literally just swipe the tube on your cheeks and blend, add more as you want to intensify the color. Technically they are a lip product but they are the best cream blushes I have ever used. After you apply it as a blush, just sweep it over your lips.  Again, this product is buildable. Use just one layer for a soft wash of color or go over it again to make it deeper. They feel like heaven and smell like vanilla. As a side note, every shade can be used on the cheeks as well as the lips. Plum just happens to be a favorite of mine.

I then lightly filled in Nicole’s brows with a brow pencil. My staple brow pencil happens to cost $2.99. Go figure. Let me use this as an opportunity to say that filling in your eyebrows is one of the simplest and most dramatic things you can do to bring structure to your face and attention to your eyes. It will seem “scary” at first but once you see how much better you look, it’s a step you won’t ever want to skip.  Everyone will notice how great you look but they probably won’t realize why. It might take some getting used to, but it is worth it.  Baby steps. Just do it.

Once Nicole’s makeover was complete, I had a blast color matching everyone for foundation and doing mini-makeovers on all of them! What a wonderful group of ladies.

Special thanks to Joanne Sardini and The Vineyard Square Hotel for hosting the event and allowing me to stay in one of their absolutely gorgeous suites. Between Joanne and the hotel and Chesca’s Restaurant I didn’t want to leave … so I made a weekend of it. What a fun time.

Thanks also to Dawn Marie Temple of Bellaria Designs Photography for coming out to take these wonderful photos for us.

Great job, Tamar!  I hope we can do it again soon!

REAL Head Shots (finally!)

Danielle Bisbano - Wednesday, July 17, 2013

It has been a long time coming but I finally made a plan to get some real deal photos done for my website.  As a consumer, I always prefer when I can actually see who I am considering working with.  I figure my clients might feel that way, too!

Liz (hair), Heather (massage) and I (makeup) had so much fun working with Amy at Olivia Greene Photography.  It was brutally hot  and humid out but I must say that everyone's airbrush makeup held up beautifully.  See why everyone wants this stuff?!  You can check out the rest of the images here.

We will be choosing our images from these photos that Amy picked.  Look for updates to my site very soon and let me know what you think!

Jordana Best Lash Extreme Mascara

Danielle Bisbano - Friday, June 21, 2013

image

It just so happens that mascara is one of those products that is not easy to make “healthy”.  Dr. Hauschka makes a great one if you are willing to shell out a few extra bucks for it but if you are looking to save some money or, if you’re like me and you need five for your kit, one of my favorites is just $2.99 and it is great.

Jordana Best Lash Extreme doesn’t come with a bunch of claims.  None, really, since there is actually no packaging to speak of; just a clear plastic seal around the tube.  You have to discover for yourself what it does.  I kind of like that.  Going in not expecting anything as opposed to outrageous claims and ridiculous photos of airbrushed models sporting fake lashes.  Case in point: look at this ad for a Dior mascara.  I’m sorry but a mascara ad sporting a photo with lashes THIS fake should come with an asterisk, a disclaimer AND an LOL!

image

Call me crazy but doesn’t that kind of defeat the purpose?  It’s like a shampoo ad where the model is wearing a wig.  False advertising much?  Anyway …

I think this mascara was the first Jordana item I ever bought.  It makes sense because there was some reason why I went back to buy practically everything else in the line.  It is that good.

This mascara makes your lashes long and thick with just one coat.  It’s not considered waterproof, at least it doesn’t say so on the tube but my own test says it sure is.  Smear some on the back of your hand and then try to rinse it off.  Not happening.  Yet it doesn’t feel hard and stiff like most waterproof mascaras.  The brush that comes with it works well but sometimes dispenses a little too much product so you may have to wipe some excess off first.  I like it even more when I use one of the disposable brushes in my kit.

I did a before and after picture for you!  Top pic is my nothing special lashes with no mascara.  Bottom is after one coat of Best Lash.  Not bad, right?

image

Of all the cosmetics we use, mascara has the shortest shelf-life so don’t waste your money on “designer” mascara.  All you are really paying for is their fancy, phony ads.  Try this instead and you can ensure that your mascara is nice and fresh for a fraction of the cost.  Beauty steals like this just have to be shared!

Jordana is only available online or at Walgreens or Kmart!

NuRoo Baby Product Packaging Shoot

Danielle Bisbano - Sunday, May 12, 2013

image

I'm so happy that I had an opportunity to work with Hope and Daniela from NuRoo again today!  If you remember, I did their makeup back in January for their interview with CNN Headline News.  Today they did a shoot for new product packaging for their signature product, the NuRoo Pocket and two new products that are still a secret. They have been traveling everywhere talking about these products and the benefits of skin-to-skin contact for mom and baby.  The NuRoo Pocket is already being sold at Babies'R'Us stores nationwide.  How cool is that?!?!  Hope and Daniela are such a joy to work with that I couldn't wait to see them today :-)

I had the privilege of doing makeup for five beautiful moms on location at a beautiful home near the water in Barrington, Rhode Island.  Most of my work on each mom was done while they held their little ones, sometimes while breastfeeding.  There is a first time for everything!  The babies were adorable.  I mean, look at this picture.  How much cuteness can you fit on one bed?  (And, no, the one in pink isn't real!)

image

As usual, I manage to remember to take pictures during and after the shoot, but never after I finish the makeup.  You'll just have to wait for the final pictures from Heidi Hope Photography

I never forget to take a picture of my makeup station, though . . . before I mess it all up.  Hey look, I see Beautycounter products ;-)

Dr. Hauschka Makeup Event at Divina Day Spa

Danielle Bisbano - Saturday, May 11, 2013

I had a wonderful time today working a makeup event at the Divina Day Spa in Westwood, Massachusetts.  The Dr. Hauschka line sponsored a makeup event featuring the new spring palette.  I got to meet some wonderful ladies and help them create a new look for spring.  Vera, the owner of Divina Day Spa, is lovely.  Her staff is wonderful as well.  We had a lot of laughs and had fun playing with some beautiful cosmetics.

I’m so happy to be able to work for a brand with such stringent safety standards.  Safe and beautiful!  You gotta love that!

Kristin (the local Dr. Hauschka rep) and I alongside quite the spread of cosmetics!  Doesn’t she look so very Hauschka-ish?  Just beautiful!
